Ukrainian tennis player Diana Yastremska will try to bring Ukraine a victory in the final of the Grand Slam tournament for the first time, reports
In the semi-finals of the Australian Open-2024, which will take place on Thursday, 25 January, Yastremska (No. 93 in the WTA rankings) will play against Chinese athlete Zheng Qinwen (No. 15 WTA ).
The match is scheduled to start at 12:00 Kyiv time.
Jastremska reached the semi-finals after defeating Czech Republic’s Linda Nosova in the quarter-finals, while Qinwen beat Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya, also securing her Grand Slam semi-final debut.
It’s worth noting that before the tournament, Jastremska was ranked 93rd in the world rankings, but on her way to the semi-finals, she defeated many higher-ranked opponents, in addition to Noskova.
Jastremska has already broken a national record, becoming the second Ukrainian woman after Elina Svitolina to reach the singles semi-finals at a Grand Slam. Elina Svitolina has previously played three times in the semi-finals of majors but failed to reach the final, so Yastremska has a chance to become the first Ukrainian woman to reach the final of such a prestigious tournament.
The match between Yastremska and Qinwen will be broadcast on Eurosport TV channel, which is available in Ukraine through the MEGOGO media service.
Bookmakers favour Zheng Qinwen, with odds of 1.55 on her victory. Bets on Jastremska’s success are estimated at 2.65.
The winner of this semi-final will play the winner of the other semi-final match between American Cori Hauff and Belarusian Arina Sobolenko in the final on 27 January.
Arina Sobolenko is the current Australian Open champion.
