Russian atrocities: Dniprorudne mayor killed in captivity, body returned home

During the last prisoner exchange, Ukraine returned the body of the mayor of the temporarily occupied Dniprorudne, Zaporizhzhia region, Yevhen Matveev, who was kidnapped by Russian invaders more than two years ago and tortured in captivity. This was announced by the head of the Zaporizhzhia regional military administration Ivan Fedorov, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
“The Russians captured Dniprorudne in Zaporizhzhia region at the end of February 2022. Later, they also captured the mayor, Yevhen Matveev. He was held captive by the occupiers for two years and eight months and tortured. During the last exchange, his body was returned to Ukraine,” he wrote.
Fedorov noted that Matveev was known for his pro-Ukrainian position and active work at the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion.
“He always worked with people and for people, listened and helped everyone who needed it. He was strong-willed and principled. During the occupation, he did not leave the city or the people, did everything to ensure the life of the community, constantly informed the population about the course of events and supported them,” he said.

Since February 2022, during the occupiers’ attempts to seize the city, he organized patrols, provided residents with basic food, set up a maternity unit in the local hospital, and regularly reported on the situation on social media.
on March 13, 2022, Matveev was abducted by the Russian occupiers at a checkpoint. His wife filed an application with the European Court of Human Rights demanding that measures be taken to release him, Suspilne reported.
