Waltz’s dismissal: who will be Trump’s new national security adviser?

1 May 22:52

US President Donald Trump has fired his National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. His duties will be temporarily performed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Trump announced this on truthsocial, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

“Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as National Security Advisor, continuing his strong leadership at the State Department,” Trump said.

Mike Waltz, on the other hand, will not lose his job. Trump recommended him for the post of the next US ambassador to the UN.

The president believes that Waltz has always put the interests of the United States above his own, so he will be useful in his new position.

Rubio has a track record of supporting Ukraine – he voted for the next aid package in 2024, actively advocated for the need for assistance, and even criticized fellow party members who questioned the feasibility of supporting Ukraine. Although Rubio has recently tone down his rhetoric on ending the war, he remains one of the most vocal supporters of the Ukrainian issue in the Republican Party.

As a reminder, in March 2025, Mike Waltz mistakenly added The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg to a confidential chat on Signal, where they discussed possible military strikes on Houthi targets. The incident caused a wide response due to the risk of leaking sensitive information.

Goldberg published a story based on what he saw in the chat. Although he initially refrained from disclosing details, after public denials from high-ranking officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hagel and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, the journalist published the full content of the conversation.

Donald Trump called the leak scandal “another witch hunt.” However, at the end of March, the media reported on a possible first resignation in the US presidential administration.
