Trump and Zelensky’s meeting at the G7 summit: what Yermak said
7 June 06:47
The head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, said during a national telethon that the purpose of the visit of the Ukrainian government delegation to the United States was to prepare for a meeting between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
He spoke about the meetings with representatives of the administration of President Donald Trump, the State Department, and Congress that took place during the Ukrainian delegation’s visit to the United States.
The Ukrainian side hopes that the leaders will hold personal talks on the sidelines of the G7 summit, which will be hosted by Canada on June 15-17.
In addition, they discussed the continuation of military assistance to Ukraine.
“There is an understanding on this issue, we need to work. President Zelenskyy has very clearly articulated our position: using the signed agreement on economic cooperation, we are also ready to buy some of it, especially missile defense equipment,” the Head of the Presidential Office said.
He emphasized that the congressmen who took part in the meeting supported the continuation of military aid and the sale of weapons for Ukraine to partner countries.
Andriy Yermak noted: Ukraine expects the U.S. Senate to support a bill to strengthen sanctions against Russia and to impose secondary restrictions on countries and companies that help the aggressor state circumvent sanctions.
“We hope that this package of new sanctions will be adopted. But even the process that should start next week in the Senate will be a very important signal, because everyone understands what it is about. It is clearly about reducing Russia’s revenues from the sale of energy, primarily oil,” summarized the Head of the Presidential Office.
It should be noted that in late May, Trump confirmed that he intends to take part in the meeting of the leaders of the world’s strongest economies, despite his provocative rhetoric against his northern neighbor. Volodymyr Zelenskyy also said that he had received an invitation to the summit.
The last time the two presidents spoke one-on-one was in late April at the Vatican, when they attended the funeral of Pope Francis.
