President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has responded to the Pope’s call for Ukraine to find the courage to raise the white flag. Zelensky did not address the Pope directly, but his words make it clear that he was referring to the Roman pontiff in his traditional video address, Kommersant Ukrainian reports
The President of Ukraine said that priests of all religions and denominations protect human lives at the front and in other areas of Ukraine, and do not try to bring together the aggressor and the victim:
“When the Russian evil started this war on 24 February, all Ukrainians stood up for defence. Christians, Muslims, Jews – everyone. And I thank every Ukrainian chaplain who is with the army, in the Defence Forces. They are on the front line. They protect life and humanity. They support us with prayer, conversation, and deeds. This is what the church is – with people. And not two and a half thousand kilometres away – somewhere there to engage in virtual mediation between those who want to live and those who want to destroy you.”
He also noted that Russian murderers are now absent from Europe thanks to the yellow and blue, not white, flag:
“Russian murderers and torturers do not go further in Europe only because they are held back by Ukrainians with arms and under the blue and yellow flag. In Ukraine, there were many once-white walls of houses and churches that are now burnt and smashed by Russian shells. And this speaks very eloquently about who has to stop for the war to stop. Everyone who defends lives and people is fulfilling the most honourable mission that can be possible in the face of such an inhuman invasion.”
In conclusion, the President of Ukraine thanked everyone “who is really close to us – with actions and prayers”.
