As a result of the drought in Europe, the water level in the Danube has dropped significantly, exposing the remains of German ships that sank during World War II. This was reported by Komersant ukrainskyi with reference to Reuters.
The ships were reportedly found near the Serbian town of Prahovo.
The ships belonged to the Black Sea Fleet of Nazi Germany. They were lost in the last months of the war, when the Germans were retreating under pressure from Soviet troops. The Germans often sank them themselves to prevent them from being captured by the enemy. Currently, these wrecks can hamper river traffic during low water levels in the Danube.
The ships are scattered along the riverbed. Some still have their turrets, command bridges, broken masts and twisted hulls. Others lie mostly under the sandy banks.
Also, four ships dating back to 1950 were discovered in Hungary’s Danube-Drava National Park near Mohacs, where the water level in the Danube was only 1.5 metres on Tuesday, a result of the extreme heat and prolonged drought in July and August.
