Attempted assassination of a colonel-witness: SBU intercepts killers in case of million bribe
20 December 02:33Law enforcement officers have managed to thwart the murder of a colonel who was a key witness in a $1 million bribery case. This was reported by the SBU press service, Komersant ukrainskyi reports
According to the investigation, the attempt was organized by the group’s organizer, who was accused of bribery.
It all started in the spring of 2024, when a group of criminals approached an officer of the SBU Main Investigation Department with a bribe offer in exchange for assistance in the raider seizure of a mining company in Vinnytsia region. The colonel immediately reported the illegal offer to his superiors.
Those involved in the crime were detained. However, while in a pre-trial detention center, the group’s organizer tried to avoid punishment by eliminating the main witness.
To do this, he started looking for a killer among the arrested criminals who had connections on the outside. The customer promised to provide all the necessary information about the witness, including his residence address and travel routes, as well as to pay the performer USD 50,000 after the crime was committed.
The SBU timely exposed the criminal plans, documented them and stopped them at the preparation stage. The offender has already been served a new notice of suspicion of preparing to commit a contract murder (Part 3 of Art. 27, Part 1 of Art. 14, paragraphs 8, 11, 12 of Part 2 of Art. 115 of the Criminal Code).
At the same time, his actions were previously classified as an offer of an unlawful benefit to an official (Part 3 of Article 369 of the CCU).
According to the SBU, the offender faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
