During the InnoTrans-2024 exhibition in Berlin, Ukrzaliznytsia and Polish State Railways agreed to develop intermodal railway routes between Asia and Europe. This was reported by Komersant ukrainskyi with reference to the press service of Ukrzaliznytsia.
Ukrzaliznytsia noted that despite the war, Ukraine remains a promising country for building diversification links between Asia and the EU, in particular through the route: People’s Republic of China – Republic of Kazakhstan – Republic of Azerbaijan – Georgia – Ukraine to the Republic of Poland via Polish-Ukrainian railway border crossings.
“Therefore, the main task for both parties is to restore and develop the Eurasian intermodal connection and ensure maximum efficiency of rail freight traffic at Polish-Ukrainian border crossings,” the statement said.
Yevhen Liashchenko, Chairman of the Board of UZ, stressed that Ukraine and Poland are key countries on this route.
“Ukraine and Poland are strategic partners in this project, so it is important for our countries to coordinate together and work on the development of Ukrainian-Polish railway border crossings and TEN-T 1435 mm gauge corridors in Ukraine. In addition, strengthening our logistics partnership will help to develop transit corridors that are promising for restoring the transit potential of our country, such as the TTM, which connects Asia with Europe,” he said.
Alan Berud, CEO of Polish State Railways & PKP Group, said that Poland’s geographical location is of strategic importance for Eurasian rail transport.
“It is here that several railway routes leading from Asia to Europe converge, including the TITR route, the Southern, Central and Northern routes of the New Silk Road and the South-Western Corridor,” said Berud.
As reported earlier, in July 2024, experts from Ukrzaliznytsia and Polish Railways held talks in the Ukrainian capital and inspected the Ukrainian-Polish border crossings. The focus was on expanding the capacity of the crossings between the countries, speeding up the control processes at the state border, and improving the comfort of passengers waiting to cross the state border at the checkpoints.
