The EU is preparing for a reform that will “cancel” Orban and company

In February, the European Commission will present a draft reform of EU treaties, which, if approved, will radically change the decision-making process in the European Union. This was stated by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen during a speech in the European Parliament, according to комерсант.

In November last year, the European Parliament approved a report on the need to reform the European Union on the eve of its next enlargement. One of the key provisions of this reform should be the provision on decision-making by a qualified majority of member states.

Currently, decisions in the EU are made by unanimous consensus, when they are supported by absolutely all member states. This allows governments such as the Hungarian one to block, for example, decisions related to support for Ukraine. If decisions are made by a qualified majority, it will be much harder to veto them.

Although this hypothetical rule on changing the voting format is still under discussion, it is expected to be present in the European Commission’s draft.
