Prices for chicken eggs in Ukraine showed a significant increase in October. Despite some media reports of a 60% rise in price, the real growth is about 25-30%. This was stated by economic expert Oleg Pendzin in an exclusive commentary to Komersant ukrainskyiKomersant ukrainskyi.

“Today’s price of eggs is even lower than it was a year ago. At the same time a year ago, a dozen eggs cost 61 hryvnia. Now the average price of a dozen is 60 hryvnias,”

– the expert noted.

At the same time, according to him, in early 2024, eggs were even more expensive – even then, a dozen eggs cost 63.5 hryvnias. Therefore, it is incorrect to talk about a “staggering increase,” he said. For comparison, prices for vegetables rose by 250% over the same period, the economist says.

However, Penzin explained the reasons for the current rise in egg prices:

“This is due to the rising cost of grain. You need to understand that 70% of the cost of an egg is feed. And corn from the new harvest has risen in price. Therefore, the rise in price of eggs is an objective process.”

The expert also drew attention to the seasonal factor.

“Starting from November, the total volume of egg production at home decreases by about 20-30%, because when the cold weather starts, chickens dramatically reduce the total volume of egg production. We are talking about a small segment, about 3-4% of the total egg production in Ukraine, but this nuance still affects the price,”

– says Pendzin

Thus, the expert assured that the current increase in the price of eggs is an objective seasonal process, from which one should not draw far-reaching conclusions. Especially given that in the long run, the price of eggs has remained virtually unchanged.
