“What kind of people are in the Canaries”. Slava Kaminska shows photo with Yanukovych – social networks explode

25 June 01:27

Ukrainian singer Slava Kaminska, known as the former lead singer of the band NeAngels, posted a photo on Instagram in which she poses with a person who looks like former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

Kaminska posted a photo from her vacation in the Canary Islands. In the picture, the artist poses near a bar with a sign “Ibiza” next to a man who strikingly resembles the former fugitive president Viktor Yanukovych.

How it looked like

  • Kaminska captioned the image with the short phrase “What kind of people are in the Canaries” and added the geolocation “Canarias”.
  • In Stories, she joked: “You won’t believe who I met,” adding the track “Batya, I’m trying ” – a famous quote from the former president’s wife.

Network reaction

Commentators were divided:

  • Part of the audience suggested that the photo was a photo montage or that the artist had taken a picture “with an ATB security guard,”.
  • Others recalled the 20-centimeter difference in height (173 cm for Kaminska versus 193 cm for Yanukovych) and doubted that a 75-year-old politician would look so young.

Could Yanukovych really have been in the Canaries?

Yanukovych was convicted of high treason and is suspected of a number of other serious crimes. He has been hiding from the investigation until now.

Background. The Ukrainian people were interested in signing an association agreement with the EU, but the government under President Viktor Yanukovych rejected this course in late 2013. Corruption and lawlessness also hindered the country’s development and worsened its socio-economic status. The Euromaidan was a violent reaction to the disregard for the interests of society.

After the bloody events of February 20, 2014, when protesters were shot on Instytutska Street in Kyiv, Yanukovych fled the capital on February 21 of the same year, and then the country.

On January 24, 2019, the Obolonsky District Court of Kyiv ruled to find the ex-president guilty of high treason (Part 1 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and aiding and abetting in waging an aggressive war (Part 5 of Article 27, Part 2 of Article 437 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The trial was held in absentia, without the participation of the defendant himself. After fleeing, Viktor Yanukovych settled in Russia.

What Kaminska says herself

The singer has not yet explained whether she really met the former president, or whether it was irony or a stylized performance.

A little later, another equally high-profile image appeared on Stories: a selfie with US President Donald Trump.

Most likely, these photos were generated by artificial intelligence.
