How to prepare for immersion in an ice hole on Epiphany: a doctor gave advice

5 January 22:00

In order for the traditional bathing on Epiphany to be safe for health, people should prepare for this procedure in advance. Family doctor Maria Melnyk told how to do this on the air of Kyiv24, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.

“First, the immersion should really be as short as possible. A few seconds is all it takes. For people who do this professionally – regularly “freeze” during the season – the immersion can be up to 30 seconds,” the doctor said.

She added that after the dive, one should thoroughly wipe oneself and put on dry and warm clothes. This should be done even when a person feels super hot. After all, such sensations are associated with vasodilation after being in cold water. If this advice is not followed, the risk of hypothermia will increase.

“Third, you should drink hot tea or compote. But in no case should it be alcohol, which further dilates blood vessels,” Melnyk reminded.

  • children should not be left unattended;
  • approach the water in comfortable shoes;
  • do not stay in ice water for more than a minute;
  • after immersion, you should rub your body with a towel, put on dry clothes and drink warm tea.
