The culprit behind the death of a Ukrainian cameraman in Hollywood is free: details of the case

The woman who was found guilty of the death of Ukrainian cameraman Galina Hutchins on the set of the movie Rust has been released from prison early. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Deadline.
Anna Gutierrez-Reed, who worked as a gunner on the film, was released on May 23 after serving only 85% of her 18-month sentence. The New Mexico Department of Corrections confirmed that she was granted early release for good behavior and completing a drug rehabilitation program.
Conditions of release
Among the special conditions of Gutierrez-Reed’s release is a ban on any contact with the family of the deceased Galina Hutchins, including her widowed husband and child. The woman returned to her home in Arizona, where she will spend a year under the supervision of the probation service.
Additional conditions include:
- mandatory employment;
- curfew;
- psychological evaluation;
- a ban on gun ownership;
- regular meetings with a probation officer;
- electronic monitoring.

Tragedy on the set
Galina Hutchins, a 42-year-old Ukrainian cinematographer, died on October 21, 2021, while filming the western Rust in New Mexico. According to the investigation, the 1880s revolver fired by actor Alec Baldwin during rehearsals contained real bullets instead of blanks. The bullet hit Hutchins and wounded director Joel Souza.
The prosecutor’s office claimed that Gutierrez-Reed was responsible for bringing live ammunition onto the set. The production of the film took place in difficult conditions – with a limited budget, tight deadlines and dismissals of the film crew.
Different fates of the participants in the tragedy
In March 2024, a jury found the gunman guilty of manslaughter but acquitted her on charges of concealing evidence. Gutierrez-Reed was also convicted of a separate incident – illegally entering a Santa Fe bar with a weapon before filming began.
Alec Baldwin, who was holding the weapon at the time of the shooting, was not convicted. His case was closed last summer due to violations by the prosecutor’s office and the police in collecting evidence. The actor even filed a lawsuit for violation of his civil rights.
The end of the movie
Despite the tragedy, Rust was completed with a new cinematographer, Bianca Kline. The film was first screened at the Polish Film Festival in December 2024, and in May of this year it had a short run in the United States.
Gutierrez-Reed’s defense attorney continues to appeal the verdict in New Mexico courts.
