The use of generators in Kyiv is finally being regulated: what exactly is recommended

22 November 14:07

The capital has approved recommendations for the safe use of generators developed by the Kyiv Territorial Control Department. The decision was supported by deputies of the Kyiv City Council. This was announced by Mykhailo Budilov, Director of the Kyiv Territorial Control Department, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.

According to him, the recommendations should contribute to the safe use of power generators, taking into account fire safety and their integration into the urban environment.

“For three years now, we have been living in difficult conditions of power outages due to enemy shelling of our critical infrastructure. Therefore, the use of generators is often the only way to provide electricity to both businesses and citizens. However, it is important to use generators responsibly, in compliance with safety rules and with respect for people around us,” emphasized Mykhailo Budilov.

What the Kyiv authorities recommend

Efforts are aimed primarily at the safe use of generators.

So, the Department of Territorial Control recommends:

– Place generators exclusively outdoors and on flat ground.

– When installing a generator, it is recommended to keep a distance of 2.5 m from trees and 1.5 m from shrubs.

– Generators must not be installed inside residential, public, warehouse and industrial buildings, in particular on roofs, balconies, outbuildings, on the paths to emergency exits.

– When installing generators, protection must be provided to prevent electric shocks to people and animals.

– Generator users should be trained and instructed on how to operate the generator.

After the recommendations are adopted, the Department of Territorial Control of the capital emphasized that the inspectors will start outreach to businesses and the public.

What to do if generators cause problems

The recommendations are, of course, not strict rules and regulations, but merely suggestions. And the question “what to do if the generator next to the apartment windows, for example, interferes with sleep” remains without an acceptable answer for the applicant. Experts advise that if the generator produces a lot of noise, smoke and air pollution, you should contact the institutions responsible for disease control and prevention, i.e. the successors of the former sanitary and epidemiological stations. Specialists of these organizations will use special devices to determine the noise level and the amount of harmful gases released into the air. And if concerns about critical levels and concentrations are confirmed, it will be necessary to go to court.
