US elections: first exit poll results are in
6 November 02:04Voting in the US presidential election is underway. The first results from key states are due in the next few hours. So far, the first exit poll data have been released, Komersant ukrainskyi reports
The first exit poll from the United States is published by CNN.
CNN’s exit poll shows that about three-quarters of voters have a negative attitude toward the current state of affairs in the United States.
Only about a quarter say they are satisfied or satisfied with the state of affairs in the country, more than 4 in 10 are dissatisfied, and about 3 in 10 say they are angry.
At the same time, voters remain generally optimistic – more than 6 in 10 say the best days of the United States are yet to come, and only about a third say they are already in the past.
Thus, President Joe Biden’s national approval rating is under threat: about 4 in 10 voters say they approve of his job performance, while the majority disapprove.
Edison Research exit poll
The survey of Americans about who they voted for is conducted by Edison Research. It interviews people across the country on behalf of a consortium of news organizations. This data is then supplemented with responses from telephone surveys to account for the opinions of those who voted in advance – nearly 80 million Americans.
According to a national exit poll by Edison Research, 48% of Americans voted for Kamala Harris and 44% for Donald Trump.
At the same time, almost 73% of voters believe that democracy in the United States is under threat, while only 25% of respondents believe it is safe.
At the same time, according to the information provided by the American polling data aggregator RealClearPolitics, Donald Trump is ahead of Kamala Harris in most swing states.
Results will be updated as new responses come in, but note that exit polls reflect only a fraction of the millions of people who have voted so far.
All polling stations will close today at 08:00 Kyiv time.
When will the results of the US presidential election be known?
The first polling stations will close at 18:00 EST (22:00 GMT) on Tuesday, and the last ones will close at 01:00 NYC (5:00 GMT) on Wednesday.
However, the outcome of the election is expected to depend on the results in seven swing states – Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
Nevada will be the last state to close its polls (in the swing states) at 10 p.m. New York time (2 a.m. Greenwich time)
First, as a rule, votes from polling stations in the United States are counted. Next, the votes of voters who participated in early voting for various reasons are counted.
After that, ballots from polling stations abroad and from US military bases are scanned.
Why does vote counting take so long?
The vote count involves checking that the number of ballots cast matches the number of voters who voted, and checking the condition of the ballots for stains and other damage. If any discrepancies are found, an audit is conducted.
The votes are counted as follows: ballots are passed through special scanners that count the number of votes. In some cases, it may be necessary to count the votes manually.
Each state has its own rules that define who can participate in the count, as well as the order of counting and at what stages and in what way voters, including observers, can follow the process.
Counting in certain states, especially in close ones, may be delayed by additional ballot review, the high volume of mail-in voting, and the possibility of recounts. For example, in states such as Pennsylvania and Georgia, a large number of ballots often need to be carefully processed, as the outcome of the general election depends on it.
The inauguration of the new president will take place on January 20, 2025, at the Capitol. The candidate who wins the 2024 election will become the 47th president of the United States.
It is worth noting that 4,300 votes of American voters who voted from abroad were challenged in 14 districts of Pennsylvania. The media suggest that this may affect the outcome of the vote.
