US presidential candidate Donald Trump has refused to debate Kamala Harris because he is allegedly “already leading in the polls”. This was reported by Komersant ukrainskyi reports with reference to Bloomberg.
“I don’t want to. Why should I participate in the debate? I’m leading in the polls, and everybody knows her (Kamala Harris – ed.), everybody knows me,” Trump said on the Morning Edition of the programme Morning with Maria.
According to Bloomberg, Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, is trying to get Trump to agree to a debate with her and President Joe Biden scheduled for 10 September. However, Trump needed to change his strategy after the disastrous outcome of the first debate with Biden, after which he suspended his re-election campaign and supported Harris.
American political analysts have pointed out that Trump is citing polls to avoid debates. This is a strategy that the politician used during the primaries when he refused to go on stage with his rivals. Donald Trump refused to debate even former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley when she was his only serious rival. But now that polls show Harris closing the gap with Trump, she is becoming a more attractive opponent for a debate.
A Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll showed Harris with a 48% lead over Trump, who received 47% support in seven important battleground states that will influence the outcome of the election. Donald Trump even acknowledged that Kamala Harris is being voted for with more enthusiasm than his other rival, the current US President Joe Biden.
Thus, according to the media, Donald Trump refused to debate Kamala Harris and scheduled a debate with Joe Biden. However, his position on the debate may change if polls continue to show Kamala’s advantage in the election race.
