More than 50 people died as a result of a powerful earthquake in Tibet

A powerful earthquake struck southwest China, in one of the mountainous regions of Tibet, on January 7. The disaster killed at least 53 people and injured 62 others. This was reported by the Xinhua news agency, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.

Tingri County and the surrounding areas suffered the greatest destruction, as many buildings located near the epicenter collapsed. According to the China Earthquake Monitoring Center (CENC), the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.8 and occurred at about 9 a.m. local time in the Tibet Autonomous Region, near the border with Nepal.

The epicenter was located 163 kilometers southwest of the town of Shigadze, home to about 80,000 people.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey estimated the magnitude of the quake at 7.1. The epicenter was located at a depth of about 10 kilometers. The earthquake’s aftershocks were felt even in the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu.

Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered a comprehensive rescue effort to save lives and minimize casualties after the earthquake. He also called for efforts to prevent secondary disasters, properly relocate affected residents, and effectively handle the aftermath.
