In the future, when rebuilding the country, the government will implement the principles of the circular economy, which include the use of waste from demolished buildings in new construction. This was announced at the international forum “United for Nature. Agenda for Ukraine” international forum, Deputy Minister of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Natalia Kozlovska said, reports

“We clearly understand that the management and processing of such a huge scale will require significant financial, human and technological resources. While Ukraine does not have a tradition of deep processing of construction waste, the recycling rate is 6% of the total. However, in our vision of the country’s great reconstruction, we see this waste as a possible future resource for the construction industry,”

– said Kozlovska.

Recycling of demolition waste requires significant financial investments. Therefore, the state should develop appropriate economic models and regulations on the mandatory use of a certain percentage of recycled materials in reconstruction projects. In the future, the ministry says, such targets should also be reflected in community development strategies.

A pilot project is already underway in Kyiv region. So far, it is about organising a temporary storage facility and a recycling line for destruction waste. Later, they plan to move towards manufacturing products from the recycled resource.

According to local governments, as of the end of 2023, more than 450,000 tonnes of demolition waste was generated across the country.
