The authorities of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea have officially confirmed the participation of North Korean troops in the Russian-Ukrainian war on the side of Russia. This was announced in a report by the state news agency of the DPRK, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.
“The Central Military Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea highly appreciated the combat units of the Armed Forces of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, which performed heroic deeds in the operation to repel a gross violation of sovereignty by the Ukrainian authorities, which invaded the territory of the Russian Federation. The operation to liberate the districts of the Kursk region from the adventurous armed invasion of the Ukrainian authorities into the Russian Federation was victoriously completed,”
– the news agency said.
Further, the DPRK directly admits that the troops of this state fought in the Kursk region on the side of the Russians:
“Units of our armed forces, which, by order of the head of state of the DPRK, were involved in the operation to liberate the districts of the Kursk region, fully demonstrated high morale and military acumen, showed mass heroism, incomparable valor and selflessness, and thus made a significant contribution to the destruction of the neo-Nazi forces of Ukraine and the liberation of the Russian Federation.”
The DPRK explains its decision to send military contingents to the frontlines of the Russian-Ukrainian war by the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement with Russia. Under this agreement, the parties are supposed to help each other, including militarily.
In this regard, the agency even quotes DPRK leader Kim Jong-un:
“All of those who fought for justice are heroes and representatives of the honor of the Motherland. Soon, a monument to the military deeds will be erected in our capital in honor of the heroism of the proud sons of the DPRK, and flowers of the Motherland and the people who wish for their immortality will be laid at the graves of the fallen soldiers.”
Since the North Korean army is officially fighting against Ukraine, Russian Telegram channels have begun to spread videos about help to Russians from “Korean brothers.”

Cooperation between the DPRK and Russia
on June 19, 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin paid his first visit to North Korea in 24 years. During this visit, he signed an agreement on a “comprehensive strategic partnership” between the two countries with DPRK leader Kim Jong-un. After the signing, Putin noted that this agreement provides for assistance in case of aggression against one of the parties. Recently, the agreement was submitted for ratification in the Russian parliament. The agreement explicitly provides for military assistance:
“If one of the parties is subjected to an armed attack by any state or several states and is thus in a state of war, the other party shall immediately provide military and other assistance by all means at its disposal in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter and in accordance with the laws of the Russian Federation and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.”
After the visit, it became known that the DPRK was supplying Russia with artillery shells, which it used in the war against Ukraine. It was reported that Russia had fired 6 million such shells at Ukraine.
Since October last year, it has become known that North Korean instructors have appeared on the frontlines of the Russian-Ukrainian war. And later it turned out that entire units of DPRK soldiers were fighting on the side of the Russians in the Kursk region. According to the head of the GRU, Kirill Budanov, there should have been 11-13 thousand such soldiers.
Ukrainian journalists even recorded the “unpacking” of a DPRK soldier.
