Chairman of the Munich Conference burst into tears at its closing

17 February 09:25

The chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Goisgen, broke down in tears during his closing speech on Sunday, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.

The German official was delivering his regular speech about the need to care about global security. He began by saying that the speech of US Vice President J.D. Vance made everyone wonder whether the West is still united by common values. Therefore, Hoisgen thanked all European politicians who have since stood up to defend these values.

“No one has done it better than President Zelenskyy,”

– heusgen said.

However, “something went wrong” after that. The official spoke about the need to implement security principles, but at the very end of his speech, he could not withstand the psychological stress.

“…but focus on strengthening their consistent application. Let me conclude, and this is becoming difficult…”

– this is how Goisgen’s speech was cut short.

The Munich Security Conference 2025 came as a real shock to many and a cold shower to European politicians after the US representatives voiced their vision of the future security model in Europe and the world. In particular, US Vice President Jay DeVance’s speech was about Europe no longer relying on the US security umbrella, as the US will no longer guarantee it. The Europeans were also told that Ukraine’s security after the ceasefire with Russia will also be on their shoulders, as it concerns European affairs, from which the United States is withdrawing.

And now the United States does not even “physically” see Europe at the table with Russia.

Against this backdrop, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for the creation of the European Armed Forces.

Europeans were shocked by this turn. On Sunday, EU ministers met urgently to discuss the situation. And today, in Paris, at the call of French President Emmanuel Macron, the leaders of the “major European powers” are to discuss security in Europe. It is noteworthy that Ukraine was not invited to this meeting either.

As for Goisgen, his tears can be explained by more prosaic reasons: it was his last speech as head of the Munich Conference. He will now be replaced by former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
