Spring weather has hit the harvest: stone fruits will rise in price, prices for early vegetables will not decrease – UCAB

Prices for early vegetables this year will not be lower than last year, and seasonal fruits, including stone fruits, may rise significantly. This was stated by Maksym Hopka, an analyst at the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club (UCAB), in a commentary to [comersant ].

What Happened:
Spring frosts and unstable weather conditions have been a serious blow to farmers. According to the analyst, the unfavorable climate has already affected strawberry yields and also damaged fruit trees – primarily apricots, plums, and early apple varieties.

What about prices:

“Today we can state that early vegetables will not be lower in price than last year,” Hopka said.

Everything that had time to ripen by the beginning of summer was formed under conditions of weather stress, so the production volumes are lower and the cost is higher.

What’s next:
The further situation on the market will depend on the weather conditions in June and July. If there are sharp temperature fluctuations or prolonged moisture, this could trigger the development of plant diseases. And this, in turn, will mean an increase in farmers’ spending on crop protection products.

Why this is important:
The increase in production costs will affect the final price of products for consumers. First of all, this applies to fruits that cannot be mechanized or saved with chemicals without affecting the quality of the fruit.
