In 2024, Ukrainians began to divorce more often, marry less often, and enter into more marriage contracts. This is reported by Komersant ukrainskyi with reference to Opendatabot.
During the first six months of 2024, Ukrainians created 72,766 new families. This is 15% less than in the first half of last year and a third less than in 2022.
It is worth noting that after a surge in the number of weddings in the first year of the full-scale invasion, the number of marriages has been gradually decreasing every year.
This year, for the first time, the number of new families was even lower than before the start of the great war.
At the same time, the number of prenuptial agreements is growing, indicating a more conscious approach to family formation. In the first six months of 2024, notaries used 3,768 forms to conclude marriage contracts, which is 25% more than in the same period last year.
Where Ukrainians get married most often
Kyiv remains the leader in the number of new marriages with 9,392 new families registered there. Dnipropetrovska oblast ranks second with 7,076 marriages, and Odesa oblast rounds out the top three with 4,896 new families.
Where Ukrainians get divorced most often
The number of divorces , which has been on the rise for the second year in a row after a decline in the first year of the full-scale invasion, is also telling.
In the first six months of 2024, 15,578 divorces were registered, which is one and a half times more than in the same period in 2023 and 18% more than in the first half of 2021.
The anti-rating by the number of divorces is led by Kyiv with 2,118 divorces. Dnipropetrovska oblast ranks second with 1,404 divorces, and Kharkivska oblast ranks third with 1,148 divorces.
The lowest number of divorces, excluding the occupied territories and regions where hostilities are ongoing, was recorded in Zakarpattia region – 224 cases. The lowest number of marriages was recorded in Chernivtsi region, where only 1,376 new families were created in 2024.
