More than 33,000 Hasidim in Uman begin celebrating the Jewish New Year – Rosh Hashanah

In Uman, Hasidic pilgrims have begun celebrating the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. This year it is celebrated from the evening of 2 October to the evening of 4 October, reports [Kommersant]

As of now, more than 33,500 pilgrims have arrived in the city to celebrate, said Igor Taburets, head of the Cherkasy Regional State Administration.

“The situation is under control. We have not recorded any significant violations. The services are working in an enhanced mode. We urge both locals and guests to respond appropriately to air raid alarms and follow the rules. The curfew remains in effect,” said Taburets.

Iryna Rybnytska, Executive Director of the Historical and Cultural Centre of Uman, in her commentary Komersant ukrainskyi said that the celebration lasts for several days and is accompanied by both religious rituals and fun, as Rosh Hashanah symbolises a new beginning and hope for blessings for the coming year.

“The celebration includes prayers, ceremonial meals and special traditions, including the sounding of the shofar (ritual ram’s horn), eating apples with honey as a symbol of a sweet new year, and prayers at water bodies to atone for sins. Rosh Hashanah begins with the lighting of candles. This is followed by the first prayer of the year 5785. It will be followed by a festive meal,” said Iryna Rybnytska.
