Fruit prices have risen in Ukraine: why did it happen?
18 November 20:51The vegetable market is showing a decline in prices for cucumbers and potatoes, but fruit, particularly apples, is rising in price. Why is this happening?
According to the expert, Ukraine has now reached the maximum prices for vegetables. The cost of various fruits has begun to “reach” these prices.
“I have repeatedly said that we are now facing a small plateau in prices, which will last until about mid-December. And then preparations for the holidays will begin and everything will go up. So soon we will see a small plateau in price growth,” explained Pendzin.
Can vegetables, which are currently on the decline, rise sharply in price?
The economist answered this question in the negative. He noted that vegetables have reached their maximum price and have completely balanced imports. So, in this situation, Ukrainians are unlikely to see potatoes at 60 UAH per kilogram in stores and markets.
“The price of potatoes will probably be higher closer to the New Year holidays. And then, most likely, the price of meat and fish – those dishes that are traditionally served on New Year’s and Christmas tables – will rise quite seriously. In the meantime, we have, once again, reached a plateau. The wave of price increases has stopped a little bit, and it is unlikely to grow in the near future,” predicted Oleg Pendzin.
Why are apples rising in price?
The economic expert reminded that citrus fruits rise in price before the New Year because it is the time when harvesting is active in warm countries.
“And when we talk about apples, we have Polish apples now, and they are traditionally cheaper than Transcarpathian and Odesa apples. In any case, we balance everything with imports. So when we talk about the prospects… well, it is clear that our producers would like to raise prices as much as possible, but then imports come in and they are left with nothing at all,” the source summarized

What is happening with prices for fruits and vegetables in Ukraine
According to the information recently released by the National Bank of Ukraine, in October of this year, the growth of prices for raw food products accelerated significantly – up to 10.5%
Hot weather without rain in the summer and early fall of this year affected the yields, ripening and quality of a number of fruits and vegetables, which affected their supply. In particular, the price of borscht vegetables and most fruits rose faster.
Prices for tomatoes and cucumbers also remained higher than last year, although their growth slowed in October.
Higher prices for raw materials, feed, and production costs, including energy, affected prices for flour, cereals, milk, and meat. The same factors are likely to have contributed to the year-on-year decline in egg prices, which slowed significantly. In contrast, the decline in sugar prices accelerated due to the active processing of newly harvested sugar beet
