Ukraine is implementing a large-scale project to equip modern energy storage systems

To implement the first large-scale project in Ukraine to create a portfolio of energy storage systems based on batteries, the Ukrainian company DTEK has chosen Fluence Energy B.V., a subsidiary of Fluence Energy, Inc, which is a global leader in the energy storage market, as a partner. This was reported by the press service of DTEK, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.
The project will involve investments of 140 million euros to improve Ukraine’s energy security and grid stability.
The project consists of six energy-saving plants, which will be located in different regions of Ukraine, with capacities ranging from 20 MW to 50 MW, for a total of 200 MW. Together, they will store up to 400 MWh of electricity – enough to supply 600,000 households with electricity for two hours, equivalent to about half of the households in Kyiv.
When commissioned, the project will be the largest energy storage system in Eastern Europe.
What are the benefits of such systems?
The energy storage systems will provide frequency and power balancing services to stabilize the Ukrainian power system at the request of the Ukrainian transmission system operator Ukrenergo. Unlike traditional power plants, energy storage facilities respond within milliseconds. The decentralized nature of the project will allow the power system to avoid outages and restore grid stability much faster at the local level than before.
In addition, the storage systems are designed to provide high-tech grid stabilization services due to their ability to form a network. Ukraine will be one of the first countries to take advantage of this innovative functionality, strengthening its energy infrastructure for the future. Thanks to its advanced control modes, the battery-based electricity storage system should also ensure rapid restoration of power supply after outages.

What is known about the foreign partner of the project
DTEK chose Fluence, a leader in the US and European markets, to participate in the project. It was founded by Siemens and AES Corporation. The company has built more than 35 GWh of energy-saving solutions. Fluence has extensive experience in integrating energy storage facilities into national energy infrastructures, including a 201 MW portfolio of energy storage projects in Lithuania and 450 MW for German transmission system operators.
Fluence and DTEK (through its subsidiary DTEK Renewables) plan to complete the project by October 2025 so that the systems are installed before the start of the 2025-2026 winter season to strengthen the Ukrainian grid during possible outages.
The project is an important part of the #BattleForLight campaign, which aims to provide Ukrainians with electricity in extreme war conditions.
Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk is involved in the Battle for Light campaign
World heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk has supported the campaign to restore Ukraine’s energy system after regular Russian attacks and has already done much to draw global attention to Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector.
“Ukraine’s energy sector suffers from shelling every day. Air defense forces, rescuers and power engineers are making titanic efforts to ensure that Ukrainians have electricity in their homes. Let’s support them and remember that we will get through this together. We are the light – Ukrainians who shine on the whole world,” Oleksandr Usyk commented on his participation in the campaign.

Before his victorious fight with Tyson Fury, a flash mob called “Battle for Light” began to spread on social media, supported by famous TV presenters, football players, and show business representatives, and then the song “Battle for Light” appeared, which united Ukrainians and became the national anthem of the battle for light.
