An investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine has revealed that from February 2022 to June 2023, the Ministry of Defence did indeed organise criminal schemes for food procurement. This was reported by the NABU press service, reports

The scheme, according to the bureau, allowed to significantly inflate prices for certain categories of products.

“The use of the existing procurement system allows suppliers to resort to abuses in pricing popular product groups: eggs are sold at a premium, and salmon or blueberries, which are not in the military’s diet, are sold at prices that are several times lower than market prices,”

– the NABU said in a statement.

The investigation is currently seizing and processing documents, and a number of examinations have been ordered, NABU said.

“Eggs by 17”

A year ago, in January 2023, journalist Yuriy Nikolov published an investigation into procurement at the Ministry of Defence in Zn.ua, which claimed that it was often carried out at inflated prices. In particular, the information about “eggs for 17” became a meme. This was the price at which chicken eggs were purchased for the army, despite the fact that the retail price in Kyiv stores at the time was on average UAH 7 per egg.

In response, the ministry said that the documents referred to the price per 100 grams, not per egg.

The scandal led to the dismissal of Deputy Defence Minister Viacheslav Shapovalov and Director of the Defence Ministry’s Procurement Department Bohdan Khmelnytsky.
