The Reconstruction Agency announced when Mykolaiv will receive a new water supply system

The construction is going on around the clock to provide water to Mykolaiv residents in the summer. This was stated by the head of the State Agency for the Restoration and Development of Infrastructure of Ukraine, Serhiy Sukhomlyn, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to him, 600 workers, 200 vehicles and 90 special equipment are working in two shifts.

“They are installing the pipe, excavating, building three pumping stations, installing reconnection chambers, and puncturing under the roads,” the official said.

However, he did not specify which company is carrying out the construction.

Who is building a new water supply system for Mykolaiv?

Initially, it was planned that three companies would carry out the construction of the water intake from the Southern Bug River and the main water supply system to supply water to Mykolaiv. As reported by Nashi Hroshi on November 11 last year, citing data in the ProZorro system, the construction of the first section would be carried out by Avtostrada Group of Companies LLC for UAH 2.28 billion, the second by Ukrtransmist LLC for UAH 2.53 billion, and the third by Rostdorstroy LLC for UAH 2.63 billion.

on April 7 this year, the MikVisti media outlet, citing data from the ProZorro public procurement system , reported the termination of contracts with Autostrada, Ukrtransmist, and Rostdorstroy and even published screenshots of additional agreements.

on April 11, the owner of Autostrada, Maksym Shkil, said that his company was engaged in the large-scale construction of a new water pipeline with a water intake on the Pivdennyi Buh River in the New Odesa area. The construction is scheduled to be completed in 5 months, in August.

The next day, on April 12, the MikVisti media outlet reported that a new customer and contractor were engaged in the construction of the water pipeline. The construction was ordered by the Service for Infrastructure Restoration and Development in Dnipropetrovs’k Oblast, which signed three contracts for the construction of the water pipeline on April 10 with a new contractor, Avtostrada Group. The total cost of the water pipeline construction was reduced by UAH 2 billion to UAH 6.2 billion.

In fact, the main thing in this story – and especially for Mykolaiv residents – is that large-scale construction continues.

How much work needs to be done

The total length of the new water supply network is 67.8 km. The first section of the water supply system is 18.4 km long. The second is 22.9 km long. The third one is 26.5 km long. The route includes 3 water pumping stations equipped with powerful pumping units (from 640 to 800 kW). The owner of Autostrada, Maxim Shkil, spoke about this.

He confirmed that the total cost of the water pipeline construction, including additional works, amounted to UAH 6.227 billion.

The route is being laid outside settlements or along their outskirts, which allows preserving the existing infrastructure and completing the work faster and without unnecessary complications for local residents.

How the new water supply system will work

Water will be taken from the Pivdennyi Buh River through four gravity pipes with a diameter of 1,000 mm and a length of more than 700 meters each. The water intake system is equipped with a preliminary mechanical filtration complex and ultrasonic protection to prevent water bioresources from entering the pipeline. The water will then be supplied by the first lift pumping station, which will ensure its transportation to a height of 104 meters to the next pumping station, the second lift pumping station. From there, the water will be sent to the third pumping station, which will ensure its supply to the chambers of Mykolaiv’s water treatment facilities. After passing through all stages of treatment, the water will be distributed to end users.

The design capacity of the water pipeline will allow transporting 120,000 m³ of water per day for the city of Mykolaiv and 50,000 m³ for the reclamation system of Nova Odesa and Mykolaiv district.

As a reminder, in April 2022, Russian troops attacked the Dnipro-Mykolaiv water supply system in Kherson Oblast, leaving the city without drinking water. In May, the city’s water supply system began to be filled with process water from the Southern Bug River. Some wells were also connected to the city’s network.

The technical solution for Mykolaiv was to supply water from the Ingulets River. However, the long-term solution to the problem was to build a water intake from the Southern Bug River and a main water supply system to the regional center, which is currently underway.
