Ukrainians continue their Australian Open triumph
18 January 2024 18:37
Four Ukrainian tennis players have made it to the 1/16 finals of one of the four most prestigious world tennis tournaments Australian Open.
Today Elina Svitolina defeated Bulgarian Victoria Tomova in the second round with the score 2:0 (6:1, 6:3).
Dayana Yastremskaya defeated Varvara Gracheva, playing under the French flag, with the same score 2:0 (6:3, 6:2).
Thus, in the third round of the tournament they joined the other two Ukrainians who had won the previous day – Lesia Tsurenko and Marta Kostyuk.
In the 1/16 finals Lesia Tsurenko will meet the second racket of the world ranking, Belarusian Arina Sabalenko, who is playing under neutral status and does not seem to represent her country. Marta Kostyuk will play against Russia’s Elina Avanesyan (No. 74), who is also playing without a flag. Elina Svitolina will compete against Switzerland’s Victoria Golubich (No. 85), and Dayana Yastremka will again try to beat a much higher ranked player – American Emma Navaro (No. 26).
By the way, our tennis players set a new national record with their victories – for the first time in history 4 Ukrainians made it to the third round of the Grand Slam tournament. Previously, no more than three Ukrainians reached the third round of the major at the same time.
