“The winter will be similar to what Ukrainians experienced in 2022-2023, with blackouts of 4 to 8 hours a day. The situation will also depend on how severe the winter is. If it is warm, then the outages will remain at the same level,” Sergiy Dyachenko
For at least a month, Ukrainians can rest assured that there will be no blackouts. At least this is the optimism expressed by the government in an anonymous comment to RBC-Ukraine.
They say that under the baseline scenario, power outages are expected to be minimal, except for days with severe frosts. A senior Cabinet of Ministers official noted that the forecast is based on enhanced protection of energy facilities, new generation and increased electricity imports.
According to the IMF, attacks on the energy sector in Ukraine in March-May caused serious damage to about half of the country’s generating capacity. This led to the introduction of blackout schedules, although their use has virtually ceased since July. The UN predicts that power outages lasting from four to 18 hours a day are likely in winter, and the IMF expects a 10% power shortage in 2024.
