For the first time, the team of the Ministry of Digital Transformation met with members of a consortium working on the creation of a European digital identification wallet to test the compatibility of Ukrainian electronic documents with prototypes of European digital wallets. This was reported by the Ministry of Digital Transformation, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.

As explained in the Ministry, Ukraine has successfully passed the test and our developers have checked how documents in Diia work together with mobile applications of EU countries.

“Ukraine is the only state out of the 20 countries participating in the project that is not yet an EU member. But the Ukrainian experience of building a digital state is unique and important for the whole world. We continue to work and move closer to the EU’s digital single market,” the Ukrainian developers emphasized.

As previously reported, each country will independently implement its own European digital wallet. They will not be interchangeable with Diia, but will be interoperable. That is, after the introduction of the digital wallet, Ukrainians will be able to use Diia in Europe, and Europeans will be able to use their digital wallets in Ukraine.

How can a digital wallet help?

A European digital wallet can be useful in many life situations that occur abroad.

Such a digital wallet will allow you to

– conduct e-government;

– open bank accounts;

– register SIM cards;

– use a mobile driver’s license;

– obtain a qualified signature;

– receive prescription services.

In fact, the digital wallet will be able to store a lot of digital documents: from highly confidential documents such as a mobile driver’s license to everyday things such as a gym membership.

What are the prospects for project implementation?

The pilot project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025 and will test cross-border interoperability at the technical level. For example, the ability to open a bank account in France using Diia.

However, the actual implementation will depend on legal aspects more than technical ones. Mandatory use of the European digital wallet in the EU is planned for 2026.

What else is known about the European Digital Wallet project

The European Parliament has supported the creation of a legal framework and a prototype of the European Digital Wallet, which will allow EU residents to access public and private services online.

Ukraine is one of the member countries of the consortium working on the development of the EU digital wallet. The Diia app is considered as an option for the project, as it already performs most of the functions envisioned for the European Digital Wallet.

According to the European Commission’s website, the main goal of the European Digital Wallet is to simplify digital identity verification processes and make them secure, reliable, and user-centered. The EU digital identity wallets are the European Union’s response to the challenges of digital identification.
