on May 15, 2025, the heart of a prominent Ukrainian linguist, Doctor of Philology, Professor of the Department of Ukrainian Language at the Mykhailo Drahomanov National University of Kyiv, Maria Plyushch, stopped beating. This was reported by the Andriy Malyshko Faculty of Ukrainian Philology and Literary Creativity of the Drahomanov University, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
Maria Yakivna was a well-known linguist, an authoritative specialist in word formation, morphology and syntax, a talented methodologist and a great educator. She left behind more than 300 scientific works that made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian linguistics.
Maria Plyushch’s life was not easy: she survived the Holodomor of 1932-33, the occupation during World War II, the difficult postwar period, and Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. She was only eight months shy of her 100th birthday. Despite her advanced age, she remained an active scholar and teacher.
Maria Plyushch devoted almost 80 years to the university, from her student years to the position of professor and head of the department. Her colleagues, students, and graduate students remember her fondly, because she was not only a great scientist, but also a kind, sincere person with a big soul.
The Andrii Malyshko Faculty of Ukrainian Philology and Literary Creativity expresses its deep gratitude for the life and work of this outstanding woman.
