The Ukrainian state is actively purchasing drones that will determine the future battlefield
5 November 09:49The state has already contracted three thousand FPV drones with homing at the lowest cost through a Prozorro tender and is now holding another tender for the purchase of 10,000 drones with homing, again through the closed Prozorro module. This was announced by Mykhailo Fedorov, Vice Prime Minister for Innovation, Education, Science and Technology Development and Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, on the air of the United News marathon.
He explained that the development of homing modules is a technically challenging task, but despite this, more than 10 companies are already producing them in Ukraine, which leads to competition in the market, allowing drones to be purchased at the lowest price.
What are the key advantages of FPV drones with homing?
According to Mykhailo Fedorov, homing systems will allow for less involvement of UAV operators themselves, which means they will contribute to the safety of our drone operators.
“It is also an opportunity to identify certain targets and hit them autonomously. And it is also an opportunity to work under electronic warfare. There are many advantages, so we see this technology as the future battlefield. Sooner or later we will come to this,” said Mykhailo Fedorov.
In turn, according to DefenseExpress, machine vision technologies with auto-tracking and targeting allow solving two main problems of FPV drones at once. The first is to neutralize the impact of enemy electronic warfare, as the drone with machine vision flies independently after fixing the target, without the necessary communication with the operator. The second is to neutralize the dependence of the outcome of the attack on the operator’s skill, since now it is not the human “hands and reaction” that are responsible, but the algorithm.
It is also important to realize that the effectiveness of machine vision depends not only on hardware but also on software.
As for the developments used by the Ukrainian army, back in June of this year, it became known that Ukraine had received Skynode S universal machine vision for drones from the American company Auterion.
