Ukraine switches to new traffic light standards: what will change from 2025
28 November 02:25On May 1, 2025, a new version of the DSTU 4092:2024 standard “Traffic Signals” will come into force in Ukraine. Despite the loud headlines in the media about allegedly radical changes in the form of traffic signals or the replacement of all devices, these assumptions are not true, First Deputy Head of the Patrol Police Department Oleksiy Biloshytsky said on Facebook, Komersant ukrainskyi reports
“Regarding the ’emerald’ traffic lights, information about which has been spread on the Internet. The new version of DSTU 4092:2024 does not provide for any fundamentally serious differences in traffic lights. According to the NIRI Institute, the new DSTU was adopted to harmonize with European standards,” he said.
The main differences include:
- Arrows on the lenses of traffic lights will be chevron;
- The color of the green traffic light signal will be green (more saturated, brought to European standards);
- Bicycle traffic lights with a bicycle icon and a 100 mm lens for bicycle lanes and placement to the right of the road, and a 200 mm lens if the traffic light is placed above the road;
- Joint bicycle-pedestrian traffic lights;
- Countdown timer on both pedestrian and traffic lights, including bicycle traffic lights.
