The US fiscal year is coming to an end, and with it, $5.8 billion in unused military aid to Ukraine. The Americans are faced with a choice: either to release the entire package by 30 September or to carry over almost 6 billion in military aid to the next fiscal year. [Kommersant] i was looking into whether there are any chances of getting the money this year
Ukraine is currently discussing the main scenario proposed by the White House. According to Ivan Usa, Chief Consultant at the National Institute for Strategic Studies, PhD in Economics, the administration of US President Joe Biden has asked the House of Representatives to transfer the funds to the next fiscal year.
However, any extension of the aid to the next fiscal year will require approval and confirmation from the new US president, economist Oleg Pendzin said in an exclusive commentary for .
“The further fate of this aid will depend on the political preferences of the new US president. As for the remaining $5.8 billion of the $61 billion, if it is not there by the end of September, it will not be there by the end of the year for sure. Because their fiscal year ends in early October,” Oleg Pendzin
At the same time, the US no longer depends on Ukraine to make a decision on these 6 billion. Both Ukraine and the US are working in their own interests, the economist says. At the same time, there are other important points.
“The US decision will be influenced by the information agenda. A negative aspect, in particular, is the information that Trump was allegedly shot by a pro-Ukrainian young man. All of this affects the perception of Americans on the eve of the election of any actions related to the financing of Ukraine,” Oleg Pendzin
If this aid is indeed postponed to next year, which the economist is more inclined to believe, the decision will depend on the team of a particular president: Kamala Harris or Donald Trump with a likely Vice President J.D. Vance.
