Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban threatens Ukraine and Europe with Trump

4 November 09:56

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said the day before that Europe would have to reconsider its support for Ukraine if Donald Trump is elected president of the United States. This was reported by Reuters, according to Komersant ukrainskyi.

As you know, Viktor Orban is against military aid to Ukraine. He made it clear that he believes Trump shares his views and is ready to negotiate a peaceful settlement for Ukraine.

“We (in Europe) have to understand that if America has a president who is in favor of peace, Europe will not be able to remain pro-war. Europe cannot bear the burden of the conflict alone, and if the Americans are moving towards peace, we need to adapt, and this is what we will discuss in Budapest,” the Hungarian prime minister said.

on November 7-8, the summit of the European Political Community will be held in Budapest, and Ukraine, according to Viktor Orban, will be high on the agenda of the meeting of European leaders.

Earlier, some EU countries discussed the possibility of ignoring the summit. But on Thursday, it was reported that the EU states decided not to boycott the meeting and to take part in the two-day summit.

The prospects for peace talks are dim

According to CNN, Russian President Vladimir Putin is unlikely to sit down to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine, regardless of who wins the US election.

According to CNN , citing experts, the scale of the war is too large for simple negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, it is a much broader conflict between Russia and the West.

John Lough, Associate Fellow of the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Chatham House think tank in London, notes that for Putin, “Ukraine is just a means to an end, and the end is to further limit the influence of the United States in international affairs.”

Ukraine’s position on the negotiations

The head of the President’s Office, Andriy Yermak, has recently emphasized that Ukraine will not accept proposals that threaten its existence, the right to self-determination, or the dignity of the Ukrainian people.

In an interview with LSM, Yermak reminded that Kyiv’s conditions for ending the war are the complete and unconditional withdrawal of Russian troops from the entire territory of Ukraine, the abolition of illegal annexations, demilitarization and de-occupation of the Western Ukraine and the restoration of freedom of movement.

He added that Ukraine is ready to take into account the interests of other stakeholders, but any adjustments must be based on international law and justice, the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine’s borders, and the country’s full sovereignty.
