The European Union has welcomed the proposal for a ceasefire agreement and the resumption of US military assistance and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. This statement was made bythe head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and a number of European politicians, Komersant ukrainskyi reports
“We welcome the news from Jeddah on the US-Ukraine talks, including the proposal for a ceasefire agreement and the resumption of US intelligence sharing and security assistance. This is a positive development that could be a step toward a comprehensive, just and lasting peace for Ukraine. The ball is now in Russia’s court. The EU stands ready to play its full role together with its partners in the upcoming peace talks…”, Ursula von der Leyen said.
European Parliament President Roberta Mecola wrote in X that the agreement is “an important breakthrough and a step towards the lasting peace we have all worked for.”
“Today’s agreement in Saudi Arabia between the United States and Ukraine is an important breakthrough and a step toward the lasting peace we have all worked for. President Trump and President Zelenskyy have found common ground on the way forward. The ball is now in Russia’s court. Europe will continue to do everything we can to end this war in a way that ensures a genuine, just and lasting peace,” Mecola wrote.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc will do “all it can” to ensure peace in Ukraine. Like other leaders, Kallas wrote in X that “the ball is, as always, in Russia’s court.”
“The EU is ready to play its full part, together with its partners, in the upcoming peace talks,” added Antonio Costa, President of the EU Council.
European leaders also reacted to the agreements reached by the Ukrainian and American delegations in Saudi Arabia.
For example, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed the agreement, according to the BBC.
“This is an important moment for peace in Ukraine, and now we all need to redouble our efforts to achieve a lasting and secure peace as soon as possible,” he said.
French President Emmanuel Macron said that the responsibility for the ceasefire lies with Russia.
“I welcome the progress made at the talks between the United States and Ukraine held today in Jeddah, in particular on the idea of a possible 30-day ceasefire. The ball is now clearly in Russia’s court,” Macron said.
He also added that France and its partners remain committed to a lasting and durable peace, backed by reliable security guarantees for Ukraine.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also welcomed the news.
“It seems that Americans and Ukrainians have taken an important step towards peace. And Europe is ready to help achieve a just and lasting peace,” he wrote on social network X.
As a reminder, Ukraine has expressed its readiness to accept the US proposal to immediately introduce a temporary, 30-day ceasefire, provided that Russia accepts and simultaneously implements it.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington now intends to address this proposal to the Russian side.
The United States immediately canceled the pause in intelligence sharing and resumed security assistance to Ukraine.
