“Pink Moon” will be seen over Ukraine this weekend
11 April 03:58
The April full moon, also known as the “Pink Moon” or “Easter Moon,” will rise on the night of April 13. The full moon will reach its peak illumination at 03:22 Kyiv time. This was reported by the Livescience publication, Komersant ukrainskyi reports
This full moon will be the smallest in 2025, a phenomenon called a “micromoon”.
The April full moon, the first spring moon in the Northern Hemisphere, occurs when the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon.
When and how to observe?
The full moon will peak at 3:22 a.m. (Kyiv time) on April 13, but the best time to observe it is at dusk, when it is low on the horizon and takes on warm colors.
Our natural satellite will be 100% illuminated at 20:22 EDT on April 12, rising in the east as the sun sets, shining all night before setting in the west at dawn. The moon will also appear bright and full on Friday and Sunday.
Pink full moon – will the moon really be pink
The full moon can appear pink for a short time depending on the atmosphere, but that’s not why the April full moon is called the “Pink Moon”. This name comes from the spring bloom of a wild flower called Phlox subulata (or “moss pink”), which is native to eastern North America according to the Almanac.
In other cultures, the April Moon has other names:
- chinese – Peony Moon;
- celts – the Moon of Growth;
- wiccans call it the Seed Moon;
- cherokee – Flower Moon.
People in the Southern Hemisphere call this full moon the Harvest Moon and the Hunter’s Moon.
This full moon is also known as the “Easter Moon” and is used to determine the date of Easter (Pascha in Latin) each year. In 2025, Easter falls on Sunday, April 20.
the “Pink Moon” will be relatively small in the sky. Unlike a “supermoon,” which occurs when the full phase coincides with when the satellite is closest to Earth in its slightly elliptical orbit, the opposite will happen on April 12. During the rising, the “Pink Moon” will be only a couple of hours after its apogee, the farthest point from Earth.
The next full moon will be the “Flower Moon” on May 12, 2025.
