Juan Vicente Perez, the world’s oldest man, has died in Venezuela at the age of 114. This was reported by the Guinness Book of Records, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.
He would have turned 115 next month.
His death was confirmed by Freddy Bernal, the governor of Tachira, Venezuela, where Juan lived:
“Our dear Juan Vicente Pérez Mora, it is with deep sadness and pain that we say goodbye to you today, that archetype of a man from Tachira, humble, hardworking, peaceful, passionate about family and tradition. We will always remember him for his optimism in life, for his faith, hope and deep love for our state of Tachira.”
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro also paid tribute, writing:
“Juan Vicente Pérez Mora has passed away at the age of 114. From the city of El Cobre, he gave Venezuela a Guinness World Record as the oldest man in the world. I send my hugs and condolences to his family and to all the people of El Cobre, Tachira. May God receive him in his holy glory!”
Juan Vicente was recognised as the oldest person to live after the death of Saturnino de la Fuente Garcia (Spain) on 18 January 2022 at the age of 112 years and 341 days.
He attributed his longevity to the fact that he “worked hard, rested on holidays, went to bed early, drank a glass of aguardiente every day, loved God and always carried him in his heart”.
Juan Vicente Pérez Mora was born on 27 May 1909 in El Cobre (Tachira, Venezuela). As a child, Pérez worked on a farm with his father and brothers.
Juan Vicente was married to Edifina del Rosario Garcia for 60 years until her death in 1997.
He has 11 children and as of 2022 had 41 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Juan Vicente lived through both world wars, saw the invention of the television and witnessed the moon landing, and survived COVID-19 in 2020.
In May 2019, he celebrated his 110th birthday, becoming the first known male centenarian from Venezuela. In 2022, after the death of 112-year-old Saturnino de la Fuente Garcia from Spain, Pérez Mora became the oldest living man in the world.
In addition, he was the 4th oldest living man in the world and was believed to be the last living man born in 1909.
The next oldest man is expected to be 112-year-old Hisaburo Sonobe from Japan, with confirmation from his family pending.
