In May, the Carpathians are covered with snow – 2 cm fell per day

Despite being mid-May, the Carpathians have unexpectedly returned to winter conditions. According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES), about 2 cm of snow fell in the mountains over the past day, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

Cold weather and snowfall are observed in several popular locations.

Weather conditions in the Carpathians

On May 8, cloud cover, thick fog and limited visibility were recorded on Mount Pip Ivan. The air temperature dropped to -2°C, and there was no wind (calm), the SES reported.

Snowfalls were also observed on Dragobrat and Mount Trostyan in Lviv region, where temperatures remained below zero.

Rescuers’ recommendations

Due to the deteriorating weather conditions, the SES urges tourists to refrain from hiking in the mountains. Rescuers recommend:

  • Regularly check the weather forecast before planning routes.
  • Download the “Rescue in the Mountains” mobile application for quick access to information and call for help if necessary.
  • Avoid high-altitude routes until weather conditions stabilize.
