In the US, PayPal is being dragged to court, while in Ukraine they are ready to thank it for its understanding and support
6 January 08:49PayPal is accused of racial prejudice against Asian Americans. This was reported by Reuters, according to Komersant ukrainskyi.
A lawsuit against PayPal was filed by an Asian American businesswoman who accused the digital payment company of racial prejudice for allegedly limiting participation in its $535 million investment program to black and Latin American applicants.
“To PayPal and its executives, Asian Americans may be a minority, but they are the wrong minority,” the businesswoman said in a complaint filed in Manhattan federal court.
PayPal declined to comment, saying it does not discuss pending litigation.
As a reminder, PayPal (English for “friend who helps you pay”) is one of the largest electronic payment systems that allows you to make purchases and money transfers on the Internet. Founded in 1998 by Elon Musk, it operates in more than 200 countries and supports several dozen currencies. Today it is one of the most widely used online payment methods in the world. PayPal began as a payment system for online commerce, gradually developing into an international system due to its convenience and ease of use.
PayPal and Ukraine
This payment system started working in Ukraine in almost full format in March 2022. Prior to that, there had been numerous attempts to bring the company to Ukraine, as only some of its services were available. There were even petitions in support of expanding cooperation with PayPal. But it all happened in the first month of the great war.
on March 8, PayPal decided to suspend services for sending and receiving payments in Russia. On the same day , according to Yurliga, Minister of Digital Transformation Mikhail Fedorov thanked PayPal’s management for suspending business in Russia and invited the service to Ukraine. Until that moment, PayPal had been operating in Ukraine partially – only accepting Visa and MasterCard cards issued by Ukrainian banks to pay for goods and services online. And on March 17, 2022, the international payment system PayPal announced its full launch in Ukraine. It turns out that the incentive for this was Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
At the time, IMF Deputy Executive Director Vladislav Rashkovan quoted PayPal CEO Dan Shulman: “In the last 2.5 weeks, 400 employees of the company have done what usually takes them 9-12 months to do.”
“As the crisis in Ukraine deepens, there is a growing need to help people in the region access critical humanitarian funds. PayPal is expanding the range of services available in Ukraine to enable its customers to send money quickly and securely to friends, family and loved ones,” the company said in a press release. The company’s customers could already receive transfers from friends and relatives, pay for purchases on websites using a card linked to PayPal, and withdraw money from PayPal to a bank account. It was also reported at the time that PayPal was temporarily canceling basic fees for Ukrainian users.
