A fake about the death of UAV designer Humennyi went viral on social media: why it happened

On Wednesday, May 7, Telegram posted information about the alleged death of unmanned aerial vehicle developer Andriy Humennyi in Kharkiv. This was reported by Komersant ukrainskyi.
The message about the alleged death of the chief designer of the KNK Aviation Scientific and Technical Society, who died as a result of a car bombing, was spread from the fake Telegram channel of Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.
“The death of a well-known Ukrainian UAV designer, chief designer of the KNK Aviation Scientific and Technical Company, which occurred as a result of the explosion of his car, will not go unpunished, all structures are involved in finding and catching the perpetrators of this crime,” the message read.
Some media outlets also spread this news with reference to the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate, Kirill Budanov.
In addition, the false news about the death of Andriy Humennyi was republished by Russian media.
In this regard, representatives of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine addressed Ukrainians.
The information disseminated in Telegram channels with reference to the alleged statement of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine regarding the terrorist attack in Kharkiv is fake. The Minister of Defense did not make such statements,” the ministry said in a statement on its official Telegram channel.
The Ministry of Defense emphasized that the head of the department does not have official accounts on Telegram. To get official information from Rustem Umerov, you need to follow his pages on Facebook and social network X.
As part of a full-scale war, Russia is actively using fakes as an element of information warfare. We urge you to observe information hygiene and check sources before disseminating any messages,” the ministry added.
