Romania to shoot down Russian drones without NATO authorization
27 February 09:40
The Romanian Senate has passed a bill on control over the use of airspace. The document regulates the procedures by which the army can shoot down drones that illegally enter the country’s airspace. This was reported by Komersant ukrainskyi with reference to Digi24
According to the document, UAVs that illegally cross the Romanian state border and fly in the national airspace without permission will be able to be destroyed or neutralized if their flight cannot be “taken under control” by Romanian or NATO military forces.
Thus, a new framework for cooperation and coordination will be created at the level of authorities and institutions with competencies in managing and monitoring the national airspace, as well as ensuring compliance with the rules of its use, which contributes to improving flight safety.
It is important to note that the draft law was approved by the Senate. In the Romanian legislative process, this means that the law no longer requires the approval of the Chamber of Deputies and will be sent to the president for signature.
Thus, the law is de facto adopted, but will formally enter into force after publication.
Within 60 days from the date of entry into force of this law, the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Economy, Digitalization, Entrepreneurship and Tourism, the Romanian Intelligence Service, the Foreign Intelligence Service, the Special Telecommunications Service and the Security and Protection Service must approve joint orders on the general framework for cooperation on measures necessary for the implementation of protection measures.
Wreckage of drones used by Russia to attack the south of Odesa region, including ports on the Danube, has been repeatedly found on Romanian territory. Without the permission of NATO command, Romanian air defense forces could not shoot down drones that flew into the country.
