An Il-76 military transport aircraft with 15 people on board crashed in Ivanovo, Ivankov region, Russia, during landing, all of whom were killed. This is reported by Russian media and Telegram channels, Kommersant Ukrainian reports
A video of a burning plane in the air is being actively shared on Russian social media. Presumably, its engine caught fire.
According to preliminary information, the plane crashed in a cemetery near the airfield near the village of Bogorodskoye.
The Russian Ministry of Defence confirmed the crash of the IL-76. According to the information, the aircraft was conducting a training flight, having taken off from the Severny airfield and stayed in the air for several minutes. In the process of turning, the aircraft’s engine caught fire.
There were eight crew members and seven passengers on board. The crash of the IL-76 in the Ivanovo region was caused by a fire in one of the engines during take-off.
According to preliminary data, all 15 people on board were killed.
According to the Russian service of Radio Liberty, the Severny airfield is home to A-50 long-range radar detection aircraft and military transport aircraft.
The situation with the IL-76
- on 24 January, an IL-76 military aircraft crashed in the Belgorod region of Russia. The Russian military leadership stated that the plane was carrying 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war who were being transported for an exchange. The Russian side claimed that the plane was shot down by Ukraine using Western weapons.
- Some Ukrainian media outlets, citing their own sources, reported that the plane was actually carrying ammunition for S-300 systems.
- The Main Intelligence Directorate reported that an exchange of prisoners of war was indeed planned for that day, but it did not take place.
- The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and the General Staff have not officially commented on the situation.
- The DIU said that the IL-76 was supposed to have Russian VIPs on board, but only five bodies were delivered to the Belgorod morgue.
