Opposition leader Alexei Navalny dies in Russia

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who was imprisoned in a Russian colony, has died. This was reported by the Department of the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Russian Federation in the Yamalo-Nenets District, reports
“On 16.02.2024, in penal colony No. 3, convicted prisoner Navalny A.A. felt unwell after a walk, almost immediately fainting. An ambulance crew was called. All the necessary resuscitation measures were carried out, which did not yield positive results. The paramedics pronounced the convict dead. The cause of death is being established”,
– interfax news agency quoted the prison statement as saying.
Navalny
Alexei Navalny is a Russian opposition politician, investigator of corruption among the Russian political elite, and a critic of Putin and his entourage.
He is widely known for the case of Navalny’s poisoning with the Novichok agent, which is attributed to Russian special services. Navalny was released for treatment in Germany, but after his recovery, he returned to Russia, where he was immediately arrested.
Navalny was tried in several criminal cases, allegedly related to embezzlement, fraud and extremism. The last sentence was handed down in August 2023 and included 19 years in a special regime colony.
In 2021, the international human rights organisation Amnesty International awarded Navalny the status of a “prisoner of conscience”. At the same time, he is known for controversial statements about Ukraine. In particular, when asked whether Crimea should be given back to Ukraine, Navalny said that “Crimea is not a sandwich” to be passed from hand to hand.
It is known that distant relatives of Alexei Navalny live in Ukraine.
At the time of his death, Navalny was 47 years old.
