The first transplant was performed at the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital after the Russian Armed Forces attacked the medical facility with missiles. This was reported by Komersant ukrainskyi with reference to the a post by the Of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on its official Facebook page.
A team of doctors transplanted a donor kidney to 16-year-old Danylo from Kharkiv region, who had been living with chronic kidney disease for many years and was on peritoneal dialysis. After a thorough examination, the doctors found that his mother could be a suitable donor for Danylo. The kidney transplanted to Danylo started working immediately during the operation, and now the boy is already undergoing rehabilitation
“This important operation was supposed to take place in early July, but it had to be postponed due to the shelling,” the ministry said.
on 8 July, the day of the rocket attack, 11 children were in the specialised department of the hospital waiting for a kidney transplant and 2 children after a liver transplant. As a result of the attack, the operating theatres and laboratories were heavily damaged, which forced the young patients to be transferred to the paediatric unit.
Now, Okhmatdyt has completed the restoration work. In particular, the operating theatres and ventilation system have been restored, allowing organ transplants to resume.
