The Ministry of Internal Affairs denies information about automatic punishment of drivers for lack of “insurance”

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has drawn attention to the fact that information is being spread online about the alleged start of video recording of the absence of “insurance” and the imposition of fines on drivers in an automatic mode, and assured that such information is not true. This is stated in the Telegram channel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.
The agency explained that there are currently no legal grounds for applying the auto-fixation system to this particular offense.
In order to make such a punishment possible, it is necessary to amend the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses and the bylaws regulating this issue to provide for the possibility of recording this particular offense.
In addition, the auto-fixation system is not yet technically adapted to record such a violation.
At the same time, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, this issue will be worked out both technically and normatively, and citizens will be notified in advance, from official sources, as before, about the beginning of recording this type of offense in automatic mode.
However, the ministry reminded that this violation can still be recorded during a police stop, so the policy must be issued, as it is not only a legal requirement but also for the safety of road users.
Where did the information about the new way of punishing drivers come from?
Wheel News, a specialized automotive publication, wrote today that a new law on compulsory car insurance came into effect on January 1, 2025, so in addition to sanctions for speeding and driving in dedicated public transport lanes, the traffic cameras may also impose fines for lack of insurance. It was reported that it is the car owner, not the driver, who will receive a fine of UAH 425.
In fact, such a message appears to have been spread on social media, which forced the Ministry of Internal Affairs to refute it.
