The explosions occurred in Beirut a day after 12 people were killed in pager explosions across Lebanon. Reuters, citing a security source and a witness, reports that the communication devices used by Hezbollah detonated in the south of the country and in the southern suburbs of the capital.
The media reports that Israel’s Mossad intelligence service planted a small amount of explosives in 5,000 Taiwanese-made pagers that were brought to Lebanon for Hezbollah at the beginning of the year. The explosives could have been activated by overheating of the battery.
In turn, Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV channel reported explosions in several areas of Lebanon, which were allegedly the result of detonations of handheld radios.
The explosions began during the funeral of militants who died as a result of pager explosions.
So far, more than 100 people have been injured in the latest wave of explosions. People complain of injuries to their limbs and abdominal organs.
In Beirut, panic broke out due to rumours that smartphones were responsible for the explosions. Social media even posted a photo of an iPhone that was allegedly torn apart from the inside. Locals are suspicious of people using phones or other devices. They even stop the cars of foreign journalists with a request not to use technology.
In addition, after walkie-talkies and pagers, the townspeople began to detonate kitchen appliances and locks that were opened with fingerprints.
As according to in diplomatic circles, the massive explosions of equipment may be due to several factors.
