According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre, from 14 to 20 August, Kyiv will experience a significant excess of nitrogen dioxide, which can have a negative impact on health. In particular, the level of nitrogen dioxide will be five times higher than the maximum permissible levels on these days.
Causes of air quality deterioration
The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre’s Facebook page states:
“During 14-20 August, due to rising temperatures and calm weather, the content of nitrogen dioxide in the air will exceed the critical level of 5 maximum permissible concentrations, which can negatively affect people’s health.”
The high concentration of nitrogen dioxide is due to an increase in the average daily air temperature and a decrease in winds. In addition, the heat and low winds will also contribute to higher levels of other pollutants in the lower atmosphere, such as sulphur dioxide and formaldehyde.
