Albanian Embassy to be opened in Kyiv

During a meeting with the heads and representatives of the foreign ministries of Southeast European countries, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced the opening of the Albanian Embassy in Kyiv. He wrote about this on his Telegram channel, Komersant ukrainskyi reports

Shmyhal welcomed delegations from Moldova, Slovenia, Albania, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Romania, Turkey and Montenegro, emphasizing the importance of the Joint Communiqué in which the participating countries condemned Russian aggression and supported EU sanctions against Russia.

The Prime Minister also outlined the priorities of the Ukrainian government, in particular in the areas of defense, recovery, energy security and integration into the EU and NATO.

“Much attention was paid to Ukraine’s European integration progress. The experience gained by countries that have already passed the path to full EU membership is very valuable to us. It is also important to strengthen cooperation between countries with access to the Black Sea. I thanked the states for supporting Ukraine’s movement to NATO,” Shmyhal said.

He suggested expanding cooperation, in particular through intergovernmental consultations and restoration projects.

“Today, the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Ukraine and Albania entered into force. I welcomed the official opening of the embassy of this country. I am grateful to each state for supporting Ukraine, which helps to counter Russian armed aggression,” Shmyhal summarized.

Thepress service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reported that the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Albania, Andriy Sybiga and Inli Hasani, held an official ceremony of exchanging ratification of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between the two countries.

“On Friday, January 17, during the Ukraine-Southeast Europe ministerial meeting in Kyiv, Foreign Ministers of Ukraine Andriy Sybiga and Albania’s Illi Hasani held an official ceremony of exchanging instruments of ratification of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Ukraine and the Republic of Albania,” the ministry said.

It is noted that after the ceremony of exchange of instruments of ratification, the agreement officially entered into force.

The document was signed last year on February 28 in Tirana, Albania, by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama as part of the Ukraine-Southeast Europe summit.

In July 2024, the Albanian side completed the domestic procedures for ratification of the agreement, and in November 2024, it was ratified by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

The purpose of the treaty is to establish a basic framework for relations between the two countries based on mutual respect and trust, adherence to international law and commitment to democratic principles. The document will be valid for 10 years and will be automatically extended for further five-year periods, unless either party declares its desire to terminate it.

It is also known that Albania will open a diplomatic mission in Ukraine.

“The conclusion of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation is a historic event in our bilateral relations. Today we will also open the Embassy of Albania in Ukraine. I am grateful to the Albanian side and my colleague H.E. Mr. Hoxha Hassani for supporting our country and working together to strengthen our ties. All of this will bring our cooperation to a new level,” said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga.
