The oldest person in the world, Brazilian nun Ina Canabarro Lucas, died on Wednesday at the age of 116.

This was reported by AFP, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

Born on June 8, 1908, Canabarro became the oldest person in the world after the death in January of Japanese Tomiko Itooka, who was also 116 years old.

Ina Canabarro became a nun in 1934 at the age of 26, between the First and Second World Wars. On her 110th birthday, she received a blessing from Pope Francis, who himself died on April 21 at the age of 88.

Canabarro was the 15th oldest documented person in history and the second oldest nun after the French Lucille Rendon, who lived to 118 and died in 2023.

Who is the new oldest person?

Now, according to the U.S. Gerontological Research Group (GRG) and the LongeviQuest database, the title of the oldest person goes to Ethel Catherham, a resident of Surrey, England, who is 115 years old.

Born on August 21, 1909, Caterham is the oldest known British woman to have ever lived and the last surviving subject of Edward VII.

According to LongeviQuest and the Gerontological Research Group, the research organizations that verify ages for the Guinness Book of World Records, she is the oldest person in the world.

Caterham, who lives in a retirement home, said when asked about the secret to her longevity last year when she turned 115:

“I do what I like. I never argue with anyone, I listen and do what I like.”

Born in Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire, Cather was the second of eight children in her family. In 1931, she met her husband, Lieutenant Colonel Norman Catherham, and they married two years later in 1933.

Her husband served as a senior officer in the Royal Army, and the couple was stationed in Gibraltar and Hong Kong, where Catherham opened a nursery. The couple had two daughters and returned to Britain, where Lieutenant Colonel Caterham died in 1976.

Caterham has lived in Surrey for 50 years and has three granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.

In an interview with the media, she said:

“I take everything for granted, the ups and downs. I have traveled all over the world and ended up in this beautiful house where everyone does their best for me and gives me everything I want. At the end of the day, possessions don’t matter – all you need is someone to take care of you.”
